Super-veggie

Katrina Lambert | Spring 2022

Zoom in, real far in behind your refrigerator door, and inside you will find a world in the vegetable drawer.
Ever looked before?
It is unlikely you would have seen it, the creatures that live there won’t reveal it.
They don’t like to be in the public eye, rather sit back and help, like a wall-fly.
Now who are these creatures, that live in your drawer? They’re with you everyday, unless you’re a carnivore…

Superheroes, of course! Powerful and mighty. Without them you couldn’t do anything, not even slightly.

We’ve got Celery and Cucumber, Lettuce and Tomato — you may have heard of them before from Potato.

But these aren’t the heroes we will talk about today. Today is a story about our heroes that live on Green Bay.
It’s a tight-knit cul-de-sac where our four friends live: Broccoli, Carrot, String Bean and Kale.

Green Bay is a great neighborhood with nutrient rich soil, it is the second largest producer of vegetable oil.
Right splat in the middle, Broccoli prepares for a big day ahead.

Only a young hero, but Broccoli is tasked with a huge responsibility. His superpower? Immuni-bility.
Broccoli has to make sure that the kids eating him stay healthy. Quite the big task, for just a little veggie.

To Green Bay Kale is new and every morning he plays his didgeridoo.
Straight from Australia, Kale moved in with Cauliflower. They discovered they share a common superpower.
Kale and Cauliflower are cousins alright, even though they look nothing alike.

String Bean and Broccoli, they go way back, all the way to the bushwhack. Being that close, they are friends and bros. Like two peas in a pod, those guys from the Barbary Coast.

Carrot specializes in beauty. She makes sure that her clientele all look their best, even if it makes them a little snooty.
With a flip of her sprouted hair, Carrot spins into action with flair.
She does hair, skin, and nails, and will even save your eyes from emails.

These superheroes don’t mind if you take a bite; it means they are doing their job alright.
So next time you open your vegetable drawer, check them out. You will be glad you did, without a doubt.
