In Celebration of Green, Let Tomorrow Be Everything

Hayley Ng | Spring 2024

But today,

a smiling little girl in overalls covered in chalk, kneeling
in the center of a brown chalk house,
told me that she didn’t have a favorite color
because that would be unfair to all the other ones,
so she changes her favorite color every day.

Yesterday, it was yellow.

Today, it is brown (she waved the brown piece of chalk in front of my face).

And tomorrow, it will be green.

And when I asked whether it would be a pale green, like a lime green,
or a dark green, like that of moss and leaves,
or a blueish, minty green like the ice cream,
or a yellowish green, like the leaves mid-transition during autumn,

she hummed as she drew a brown chalk window to her house,
and said it can be all of them.

Every kind of green.
