commute
by freddy butler & meg schanes
Commute is a collaborative visual project that fuses writing by Freddy Butler and photography by Meg Schanes to represent the intersection of lives along a daily commute. The collages feature fragments of photographs taken along the streets of Manhattan within the past one to two years. The text interwoven throughout the visuals speaks to the dynamics of city-living from above and below ground, as well as the complexity of when the public and the private converge.
Freddy Butler (he/him) is an aspiring writer of short stories, creative nonfiction, and hopefully someday something that makes money. He is a senior in the creative writing concentration at Fordham, and serves as Poetry Editor for Bricolage. He is also a jazz guitarist, record collector, and overall music obsessive, and will argue for hours about pretentious avant-garde clothing.
Meg Schanes (she/her) is a twenty-year-old interdisciplinary artist with backgrounds in both traditional and digital media. With past professional experience in photography, videography, and creative writing, her recent work has shifted to emphasize personal expression and multimedia experimentation. Meg is in her second year at Fordham University Lincoln Center, where she is a double-major in humanitarian studies and English with a creative writing concentration.
